Pencil Grades Explained: What HB, 2B and 6B Really Mean — and How to Specify Your Pencil Order
Short answer: a pencil specification has seven fields — grade, barrel shape, length, ferrule/eraser, packaging, print and compliance. Most pencil RFQs only state the grade (usually HB) and a quantity, which is where quotes and samples go wrong. This guide explains what HB / 2B / 6B actually mean, when to choose hexagonal vs flat vs round barrels, and gives the 7-field checklist our quoting team uses.
What the H and B on a pencil barrel actually mean
Between mid-July and mid-October 2026, H&B’s RFQ desk received 30 requests for pencils and writing tools. We read every specification line before quoting, and the pattern was consistent: buyers stated a grade — usually “HB” — and a quantity, then stopped there. Barrel shape, length, ferrule and eraser were left open in nearly all of them. Under-specified requests are exactly where quotes and samples go wrong, so here is the buyer-facing version of how pencil specifications work.
Graphite pencils are graded on a scale from hard (H) to black/soft (B). The higher the number, the more extreme the property:
| Grade family | Hardness | Line darkness | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4H–6H | Very hard, light | Faint | Technical drawing, fine detail, erases cleanly |
| 2H–3H | Hard | Light | Technical work, lettering |
| HB | Middle | Medium | The global default: school, office, exams |
| F | Between HB and 2B | Medium-dark | Fine work that needs a little more body |
| 2B | Soft | Dark | Writing practice, sketching |
| B–4B | Softer | Darker | Sketching and shading |
| 6B–8B | Very soft, dark | Very dark | Art shading, charcoal-like tones in graphite |
Two things worth knowing: HB is not a brand or a quality tier — it is a hardness point, hard enough to keep a fine point through daily use, soft enough to lay down a visible line. And the scale is continuous: 9H–9B pencils exist for specialized work, but the HB–6B band covers roughly every retail and promotional need.
Why “HB” shows up in almost every B2B pencil order
In the latest batch of 30 pencil RFQs, eight requests specified HB explicitly — including the largest order in the batch, 50,000 HB pencils packed twelve to a box. HB is the default for a reason:
School and office procurement buys HB because it is durable, inexpensive to produce at scale, and what students are trained on. Promotional and branded pencils default to HB because the buyer wants a writing tool — the logo, not the graphite, is the product. Exam and testing supply specifies HB because the hardness survives a full day of heavy writing.
If you are sourcing for any of these three jobs and your RFQ does not say “HB”, it will probably be quoted as HB anyway — but say it. It removes a question from the quote round.
Barrel shape is not cosmetic
Three barrel shapes dominate B2B pencil orders, and each solves a different problem:
| Shape | Why it is used | Where we see it |
|---|---|---|
| Hexagonal | Flat faces stop the pencil rolling off desks; most ergonomic for sustained writing | Default for school, office and promotional pencils — several recent RFQs asked for hexagonal barrels with colored varnish |
| Flat (carpenter) | Wide flat side for marking wood; thick black core shrugs off rough handling | Three recent carpenter-pencil orders, including 10,000 units in royal blue with a double-sided logo |
| Round | Classic artist profile, no flat facet | Artist and sketch sets, mini promotional pencils |
Carpenter pencils deserve their own note: they run at 7 inches (about 178 mm) with a thick black core, and “HB” in a carpenter order refers to the hardness convention, not to a thin writing core. If you are buying marking pencils, specify “carpenter pencil, flat side, 7 inch” — do not assume a standard writing pencil is what you need.
Length, format and the promo-pencil economy
Pencil length follows the job: standard writing/drawing pencils run around 180–190 mm; carpenter pencils sit at 7 inches (≈178 mm), the industry length; mini promotional pencils land at 1.5–2 inches (≈44 mm) — small enough for a desk organizer or gift insert, long enough to use.
In the last batch, three RFQs asked for mini or short pencils: 12-color mini sets in paper tubes, 8-piece flip-top boxes, and 3.5-inch mini colored pencils in kraft boxes. One request asked for oversized novelty pencils with a custom logo and text — a display piece rather than a writing tool. If that is the job, say “novelty / oversized” so the quote reflects the packaging and freight.
Ferrule, eraser and the small details that cost rounds of email
Standard ferrule + eraser is the safe default for school and office pencils. No ferrule is typical for artist and sketch sets, where users prefer a separate eraser and a clean barrel for printing. Custom eraser shapes — one recent RFQ asked for HB pencils topped with 3D animal-shaped erasers — are manufacturable, but they change the tooling, the per-unit price and the lead time, so specify them up front. And state whether pencils should ship pre-sharpened or unsharpened: promotional mini sets are almost always pre-sharpened, bulk writing pencils usually ship unsharpened.
The 7-field spec checklist
Before you send a pencil RFQ, fill in these seven fields. It is the exact list our quoting team uses:
| # | Field | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Grade | HB |
| 2 | Barrel shape | Hexagonal |
| 3 | Length | 185 mm standard |
| 4 | Ferrule / eraser | Standard silver ferrule + pink eraser |
| 5 | Packaging | 12 per box, box size and artwork |
| 6 | One-color logo on barrel — see our custom logo pencils guide | |
| 7 | Compliance | EN 71-3 / ASTM D-4236 documents for children’s sets — see the US & EU compliance guide |
An RFQ with all seven fields quoted in one round is the norm; an RFQ with only a grade and a quantity typically takes two or three more rounds, and every round adds calendar time to your sample.
FAQ
What is the difference between HB and 2B pencils? HB is harder and lays down a lighter line; 2B is softer and darker. For everyday writing, exams and promotional pencils, HB is the standard choice. 2B is common for writing practice and light sketching.
Is a higher number always better? No — the number only describes hardness and darkness. A 6B is “better” for shading, an HB is “better” for daily writing, and a 4H is “better” for technical detail. Match the grade to the job.
Why do most B2B pencil orders specify HB? Durability, cost at scale, and training familiarity. In our latest batch of 30 pencil RFQs, HB was the most-specified grade, including a 50,000-unit order packed 12 to a box.
What is the standard length for a carpenter pencil? Seven inches (about 178 mm), flat side, thick black core. If you specify “carpenter pencil” without a length, 7 inch is what will be quoted.
